Ukrainian Language Classes for Adults

Background
Ukrainian Language Classes for Adults have been offered continuously at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Parish since 1989. Classes were started in response to requests by members for the opportunity to learn about their language, culture, and the language of our Liturgy. Since that time any person who wishes to become a student of Ukrainian is welcome, whether he/she is a member of St. Andrew’s or other parishes in the Ukrainian community, or those who have no-Ukrainian background whatsoever.

In the beginning, classes were organized on an individual basis, but around 1991 St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Auxiliary agreed to provide support to the language classes in fulfilling one of the mandates of the Ukrainian Women’s Association, that is, promoting and offering Ukrainian Language education and education in general. A committee, consisting of members of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ organizes the classes and oversees the operation of the language school. This committee reports to the Auxiliary on a regular basis.

Membership
St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Language School for Adults is a member of International Heritage Language Association (IHLA) through whom we are also members of International Second Language Association (ISLA) and the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT).

Today it is important for everyone to recognize that Ukrainian has an immeasurable impact, not only as a Heritage language, but an International and Global one, that Ukrainian offers not only our famous dancing, culture and food, but a Ukrainian intellectual tradition that is second to none; that Ukrainian is a living culture, and includes among other things the Ukrainian Avante pop culture, music, etc.

Ukrainian language is to be sought not only for sentimental and traditional reasons, but also as a contemporary language of value to all learners, whether they have any connection to Ukrainian or not.
